Candle Fragrance Calculator: How Much Fragrance Oil per Candle?

Work out exactly how much fragrance oil your candles need. Enter your wax weight and fragrance load, and this free calculator from Aromya, a fragrance oil manufacturer in Delhi, gives you the grams of fragrance oil per candle and for the whole batch.

Suggested for soy wax: 8% to 10%
Weigh the wax, not the jar. A 200 ml jar holds roughly 170–180 g of soy wax.
16 gfragrance oil per candle
800 gfragrance oil for the batch
10.0 kgwax for the batch
Order 1 kg of fragrance oil for this batch.

How the calculation works

Candle makers measure fragrance load as a percentage of the wax weight. The formula is:

Fragrance oil (g) = wax weight (g) × fragrance load (%) ÷ 100

Example: 200 g of soy wax at 8% needs 200 × 8 ÷ 100 = 16 g of fragrance oil. For 50 candles that is 800 g, so a 1 kg bottle covers the batch.

Recommended fragrance load by wax

Wax Typical fragrance load Notes
Soy wax 8% to 10% Most popular for container candles; let candles cure for 1 to 2 weeks.
Paraffin wax 6% to 12% Strong hot throw; check your wax supplier's maximum.
Coconut / coco-soy 8% to 12% Creamy finish, good scent throw.
Gel wax 3% to 5% Use fragrance oils suitable for gel to avoid cloudiness.
Beeswax 3% to 6% Has its own honey scent, so it holds less fragrance.

These are typical ranges, not rules. Always check the maximum load your wax manufacturer recommends, test burn a few candles with your wick and jar, and stay within the IFRA limit for candles shown on your fragrance oil's IFRA certificate.

Tips for a stronger scent throw

  • Add fragrance oil at the temperature your wax supplier recommends (often around 80 to 85 °C for soy), then stir gently for 2 minutes.
  • Let soy candles cure for at least 7 days before testing the scent.
  • More fragrance is not always better: going over the wax's limit can cause sweating, poor burning and soot.
  • Choose the right wick size for your jar diameter; a wick that is too small will not release the scent.
