Aromya private label essential oil and aroma oil manufacturing - start your brand in India

How to Start a Private Label Essential Oil Brand in India: A Step-by-Step Guide

Home fragrance, diffuser oils and wellness products are growing fast in India, on marketplaces, Instagram and in gift shops. The good news is that you do not need your own factory to start a brand. With private label manufacturing, a manufacturer makes the product and you sell it under your own brand name, logo and packaging. This guide walks you through the process step by step.

What is private label?

Private label means a manufacturer produces a ready, proven product (for example, a rose aroma oil or a ceramic diffuser set) and packs it with your brand on the label. You focus on branding, marketing and selling; the manufacturer handles formulation, filling and quality.

It is different from fully custom manufacturing, where a new formula is developed from scratch. Private label is faster, cheaper to start and lower risk, which is why most new brands begin this way.

Step 1: Choose your niche and customer

Decide who you are selling to before you choose products. Some popular directions:

  • Home fragrance: diffuser aroma oils, reed diffusers, room sprays.
  • Gifting: ceramic diffuser and oil gift sets for Diwali, weddings and corporate orders.
  • Candles and soaps: fragrance oils for your own candle or soap line.
  • Hospitality: signature scents for hotels, spas and salons.

Step 2: Pick a starter range

Start small. Five to eight scents are usually enough to test the market. Mix proven best-sellers (rose, lavender, sandalwood, mogra) with one or two trend scents (lychee, watermelon, orange). You can add more once you see what sells.

Step 3: Order samples and test

Ask your manufacturer for samples and test them the way your customer will use them: in a diffuser, a candle or a room. Check scent strength, how long it lasts, and whether you like it after a few days, not just on first smell.

Step 4: Create your brand and packaging

Choose a brand name, logo and label design. Decide on bottle size (10 ml and 15 ml are common for diffuser oils), bottle style, cap and outer box. Your label should show the product name, net quantity, how to use, safety warnings, batch number and your company details. Check the labelling rules that apply to your product category in India, especially if you sell on marketplaces.

Step 5: Confirm documents and compliance

Ask for a COA (Certificate of Analysis), SDS (Safety Data Sheet) and, for fragrance oils, an IFRA certificate. Marketplaces, retailers and export buyers often ask for these. Keep them on file for every product.

Step 6: Place your first order

A low minimum order quantity (MOQ) lets you launch without locking up too much cash. Confirm price per unit, lead time, payment terms and how repeat orders will work so your scent stays the same every batch.

Step 7: Launch and sell

  • Set up your own website or a Shopify store.
  • List on marketplaces such as Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho.
  • Use Instagram and reels to show your products in real homes.
  • Approach local gift shops, salons and corporate buyers for bulk orders.

How much does it cost to start?

Costs depend on the number of scents, bottle type, packaging and order quantity. Most of your first spend goes on stock and packaging, plus some budget for photos and marketing. Starting with a low MOQ and a small range keeps the risk manageable. Ask your manufacturer for a quote based on your exact plan.
