If you are buying oils in bulk for a shop, a candle line, a spa or your own brand, one of the first questions is: should you buy essential oils or fragrance oils? They look similar in the bottle, but they are made differently, behave differently and suit different products. This guide explains the difference in simple terms so you can choose with confidence.
Essential oils and fragrance oils from Aromya, Delhi.
What is an essential oil?
An essential oil is a natural extract taken from a plant: flowers, leaves, bark, peel, roots or seeds. Most essential oils are made by steam distillation; citrus oils such as orange and lemon are usually cold-pressed from the peel. The scent comes only from that plant, so lavender essential oil smells of lavender and nothing else.
Because each oil depends on the crop, weather and harvest, essential oils can vary a little from batch to batch, and some (such as rose or sandalwood) are naturally very expensive.
What is a fragrance oil?
A fragrance oil (also called an aroma oil or perfume oil) is a blend created by perfumers. It can combine aroma chemicals, natural extracts and sometimes essential oils to build a specific scent. This is how you get scents that no plant can give directly, such as lychee, watermelon, "fresh linen" or a signature hotel scent.
Fragrance oils are designed for performance: a strong scent throw, good stability in products like candles and soaps, and the same smell batch after batch.

Which should you buy in bulk?
Choose essential oils if…
- Your brand promise is "100% natural" or plant-based.
- You make aromatherapy-style or natural personal-care products.
- Your customers specifically ask for pure essential oils.
Choose fragrance oils if…
- You make diffuser oils, candles, soaps, reed diffusers or room sprays and want a strong, long-lasting scent.
- You want scents like lychee, watermelon, mogra blends or a custom signature fragrance.
- You need the same scent every order at a predictable price.
Many brands use both: essential oils for a natural line and fragrance oils for home fragrance and gifting.
What to check before you place a bulk order
- Ask for documents. A good supplier can provide a COA (Certificate of Analysis), an SDS (Safety Data Sheet) and, for fragrance oils, an IFRA certificate showing safe use levels for each product type.
- Test a sample first. Try the oil in your actual product (diffuser, candle wax or soap base) before ordering in kilos.
- Check the minimum order. Some suppliers start at 25 kg; others, like Aromya, supply from 1 kg so you can test the market first.
- Confirm consistency. Ask whether the supplier can repeat the same scent for future orders.

Frequently asked questions
Is fragrance oil the same as essential oil?
No. Essential oils are natural extracts from a single plant. Fragrance oils are blends created by perfumers to give a specific, consistent scent.
Which is better for a diffuser?
Both work. Fragrance (aroma) oils give a stronger, longer-lasting scent and many more choices; essential oils suit customers who want a natural product.
Which is better for candles?
Fragrance oils are usually preferred for candles because they are designed for strong scent throw in wax. Always check the IFRA certificate for the safe use level.
